How Strokes Are Given in Golf? Sheridan

Published date: September 3, 2026
  • Location: Sheridan, Wyoming, United States

In golf, strokes are given based on a player’s handicap. The higher-handicap player receives extra strokes on the holes where they need them most. These strokes are assigned according to the course’s Stroke Index (SI), which ranks holes from hardest to easiest.

For example, if a golfer receives 6 strokes, they get one stroke on the six holes ranked Stroke Index 1 through 6. If a player receives more than 18 strokes, they may receive additional strokes on the same holes.
